Mariana Reyna is a Marine Scientist with over 15 years of expertise in marine protection and fisheries management. Throughout her career, she has focused on the management of natural resources, particularly in Protected Natural Areas and socio-ecological systems, significantly contributing to the development of strategies for the protection of critical marine ecosystems in Mexico.
Mariana holds a Ph.D. in Environment and Development and a Master’s in Coastal Oceanography. During her studies, she led research on the socio-ecological vulnerability of coral reefs to climate change, particularly in the Mexican Caribbean’s Protected Natural Areas.
Since 2019, she has been an Ocean and Fisheries Scientist at Oceana Mexico, where she has led three scientific expeditions to crucial coral reef sites and coordinated the study that led to the creation of a Marine Protected Area. Scientific expeditions are vital to protect the oceans. These ventures uncover the biological intricacies of unexplored sites like Bajos del Norte and Alacranes Reef. From planning logistics and navigation routes to diving for data collection, every detail is meticulously prepared. Despite challenges, these expeditions lead to invaluable findings that inform policies and initiatives for ocean protection.
Her achievements include leading the creation of the Bajos del Norte National Park and developing strategic alliances for marine protection with a vision that incorporates socio-ecological systems. Through her work, Mariana seeks to secure a brighter future for marine life and humanity alike.
